| Aug. 11th, 2005 08:46 am WRITING ASSIGNMENT: the future... Take a moment to think about what the web site could do for the school in the years to come. What new sections can open up? Some ideas are the Teacher's Section with areas for projects, homework, and research, a PACHS Photo Album from the past three decades, an Online Yearbook, and an Alumni Directory for checking how to get in touch with graduates of PACHS.
Think of a couple ideas for how the website can be expanded into new areas for students, teachers, and the community. Leave a comment

| Aug. 9th, 2005 08:45 am WRITING ASSIGNMENT: reflecting back... Four more days until the web design apprenticeship program is finished. You spent three weeks learning Adobe Photoshop & Macromedia Dreamweaver and three weeks planning, designing, and producing a web site for Dr. Pedro Albizu-Campos High School. We worked in two different schools, Wright College's Vocational Center and PACHS. We worked in four different computer classrooms. We made presentations, took photographs around the community, worked on group activities, and created bling-bling text in photoshop. There were serious problems with paychecks, and anger and frustration ensued. There were seven apprenticeses that stuck with the program and worked hard until the web site was finished. Some of these students worked best on design and layout, some worked best on research and development.
1.) today's writing assignment is to write about your experience in this web design apprenticeship program. take extra time to write this and put your best effort into it. this writing will be posted on the new website in the section for the students that created the site: You. Leave a comment

| Aug. 5th, 2005 03:05 pm to all ASM/ASN web design apprenticeship instructors today, my students we denied a paycheck once again. i worry if i will lose more students as a result.
two weeks ago, my students collectively wrote a letter to After School Matters concerning the issue of their delinquent paychecks. the students expressed their frustrations and explained how a late paycheck means the difference between being broke and being able to buy things such as food, diapers, and clothing for their families and selves. we also specifically requested an explanation and an apology from ASM. we handed this letter over to Sarah on monday, july 18th. we have not received any explanation from ASM directly, nor have received an apology. furthermore, one of my students was in an ASM program in the summer of 2004 and a similar problem with delinquent checks occurred. this seems to give the impression that ASM just doesn't feel that our students need their pay checks on time. as a result of the late pay checks, a handful of my students have quit.
here is my request: please have your class write a letter to ASM detailing their thoughts and problems they have with the issue of the delinquent paychecks. please contact sarah on how to have these letters delivered to the staff of ASM. lastly, please publish your letter somewhere on your school's web site, possibly in a section for the web design students (my students are creating a section for themselves--the original web designers). making this information public will both show the students that this issue is important and to create an official document of what occured this summer.
i plan on sharing the letter my students wrote at the culminating event if there are ASM staff members there. i feel as much pressure should be put on ASM to correct this problem, or else it may just continue to discourage students in their programs year after year.
sincerely, nicholas krebill Leave a comment

| Aug. 5th, 2005 09:00 am WRITING ASSIGNMENT In five weeks, you've learned the basics of working with graphics and web pages. In two weeks, you have worked together to create a website for Dr. Pedro Albizu-Campos high school. If you were to create a web site on your own, what would you create? Would you like to create a web site for yourself, or perhaps for an organization or buisness? If you don't want to create web sites, what will you do with your newly aquired skills?
